Dressage & Rider Test.
With regard to teams why not introduce a new team.
*Keep the Prelim Teams as Prelim all 4 scores count, no individual qualifiers*Introduce a Novice team where all riders ride Novice Test all 4 scores
count, no individual qualifiers.
*Elementary and Mediums individuals only.
*Rider Test to change to 4 scores count, no individual qualifiers.
*Please ensure BD judges are aware of BRC rules!

With regards to Dressage and Riding Tests, we have discussed the possibility of having more team only competitions and taking the Elementary test out of the Open Dressage competition before and the general consensus was that it would be dumbing down. The team only idea would mean that people would go home empty handed from the championships. Even the Novice Dressage team qualifiees are awarded individually at the champions, which is nice.
Show Jumping & Style Jumping
*Why do so few senior teams qualify. Surely it would make for a better
Championships if it were based on the Junior qualification.
* Make the show jumping and style teams only, no individuals.
*Introduce Intermediate and Open Style Jumping competitions to make the
trip to Lincoln more worthwhile. If teams have a chance of qualifying for two
competitions,
*Why do we need to use BSJA judges. The rules will never be the same for a
two round competition. It would be better to have trained experienced BRC
Areamembers judging, after all, it is not difficult.
*Change the rule to 4 faults for a knock down and 3 for a refusal. Why keep
complying with BSJA rules in a BRC competition which is rarely used in this
format for BSJA?

Regarding the show jumping, there are far more senior at the nationals than juniors, so I’m not sure where the figures have come from to generate that discussion. Again, we would have a lot of unhappy customers if the individuals went away empty handed. With regard to the Open and Intermediate Style jumping, we aim to help the rider’s ability where possible, and the marks show that not all riders are successful at this level. We feel that two more classes wouldn’t be successful. Anyone of the show jumping class entries is entitled to enter the style jumping if they want to make their trip to Lincoln more
worthwhile (of course they’d have to qualify first) so this theory is flawed. Besides which, we may not have the space at Lincoln.
We use BSJA judges simply because they know the rules inside out. It is a stipulation of BRC so we all have to follow it. We follow the penalties as per BSJA so as not to confuse things, and so that the compulsory BSJA judges do not have to learn two sets of rules and create space for error. Fence judges are usually chosen because of their experience. If they are not confident then they are usually paired with someone who is experienced. The briefing in the morning is fully comprehensive, and each fence judge at cross country is only looking after one fence each not an entire course.
Horse Trials
*Keep the team & individual qualification, as it is a 3 phase competition.
*Please be aware that at Championship a dressage writer was being asked to
refer the rider to BD rules when in fact it was being run under BE rules.
*Apply the rule ‘Why do we need to use BSJA judges’ for the show jumping
Section. We do not use qualified fence judges for the cross country.

Certain Rules for BE Dressage refer to BD rules. If circumstances such as this arise (you have mentioned that a writer referred the judge to BD rules) then we need to be told so that we can investigate. There is not much we can do about these things retrospectively.
Dressage to Music
*Could Preliminary DTM be introduced for 2010.
Reply from HQ
I don’t think that there would be many people interested in Prelim dressage to Music (correct me if I am wrong). And also, both days at the championships this year started at 7am and finished at 8pm. I don’t think anyone would thank us for adding another competition and I can’t imagine having a 3 day dtm championship!
Office rule changes
*As soon as an Area has run a qualifier and the results have gone to HQ, the
winners should be invited to the qualifying championship. Why is there so long
a wait before invitation? At present, there is only a week to turn around the
entries from the invited clubs, a logistical nightmare for working secretaries.
*Reserves need not be named at close of entry. Reserves must have
completed Area standard competitions. As reserves will be fewer than teams
entered, verification will be easier at the later stage. It seems pointless to
leave reserves at home when they are willing to travel the day before to complete the team. The team which loses two riders, then become individuals although they qualified as a team. However if the Prelim Dressage team loses 2 riders the individuals may not compete. This seems to go against the spirit of the competition.

I can only apologies about the speed at which competitors were expected to return their entry forms for the national championships this year. That was simply because we didn’t have manpower. The competitions administrator left in May and I was just part time then. So had to deal with the championships as they were in front of me. The new Competitions administrator didn’t start until August so her help with sending out the invitations fro Lincoln was well received as far as I am concerned! The championships went ahead and everyone that was entitled to be there was, so in my mind it was a result considering.
We are taking steps to make sure that things run as they always have done, in the future. So we will begin to send out a holding letter to those competitors that qualify early on before the championship fees have even been confirmed etc. And we are also working on a successful means of electronic payment for the prelim entries and maybe even the championship entry fee too (although this is obviously more complex as we have to make sure that people that haven’t qualified don’t try and buy their way into Lincoln!).
We have tried and tested many ways of making the reserve system easier for competitors, however, this makes it harder for us to check their eligibility. This year, we are talking about allowing there to be more than the necessary/permitted number of reserves to be named on the entry form, in order that we can verify their eligibility, but that only two may be put into the team (apart from one for the pairs dressage, and 3 for the rural riders).
